Why Sprays and Zappers Fall Short

Citronella candles, bug zappers, and chemical sprays are the go-to mosquito solutions for most homeowners. But they all share the same weakness: they reduce mosquitoes without eliminating them. One bite is all it takes to ruin an evening outdoors.

Chemical sprays also carry health concerns — especially for children, pets, and anyone sensitive to DEET or permethrin. And they need constant reapplication.

The Screen Enclosure Advantage

A physical barrier is the only 100% effective mosquito solution. Retractable screens create a sealed outdoor room that mosquitoes simply cannot enter. You get full airflow and visibility with zero bugs.

Unlike permanent screen rooms, retractable systems let you open up completely on bug-free days. Motorized operation means switching between open and enclosed in under 30 seconds.

Best Applications

Retractable screens work on virtually any outdoor structure:

  • Patios — wall-mount to the house and post supports for a flush seal
  • Decks — mount to railing posts or overhead beams
  • Gazebos — enclose all four sides with independently controlled screens
  • Pergolas — combine with louvred roofs for a fully enclosed outdoor room
  • Porches — convert a three-season porch into a screened room

Mesh Options

Not all screen mesh is the same. For mosquito control specifically, you need a mesh density of at least 18x14 (18 horizontal threads per inch, 14 vertical). Our standard insect mesh exceeds this specification.

For areas with black flies or no-see-ums, we offer finer mesh options. There's a slight trade-off in airflow, but the protection is worth it for lakefront and rural properties.

Cost vs. Chemical Treatments

Professional mosquito spraying costs $400-$800 per season in the GTA and needs reapplication every 3-4 weeks. Over 10 years, that's $4,000-$8,000 — with no guarantee and ongoing chemical exposure.

A retractable screen system is a one-time investment that lasts 15+ years. It eliminates mosquitoes completely within the enclosed area, adds usable living space, and increases your property value.
