What Makes a Good Shutter Company?
Toronto has dozens of companies offering roll-up shutters, but the quality of installation varies enormously. A great product installed poorly will underperform a good product installed correctly.
Here's what to evaluate before signing a contract:
1. Specialization vs. Generalization
Companies that specialize in roll-up shutters and security closures understand the nuances — correct guide rail shimming, proper motor sizing, weather sealing, and integration with existing structures.
General contractors and window companies that offer shutters as a side product often lack this depth of expertise. Ask how many shutter installations the company completed last year.
2. Product Quality and Sourcing
Ask about the aluminum alloy grade, slat profile (foam-filled vs. hollow), motor brand, and where components are manufactured. Quality shutters use T6-grade extruded aluminum with marine-grade powder coating.
- Foam-filled slats provide better insulation and noise reduction
- European motors (Somfy, Simu) outperform generic imports in reliability
- Powder coating should be rated for 10+ years of UV exposure
- Ask for a sample slat to inspect build quality firsthand
3. Warranty and Insurance
A reputable company carries full liability insurance, WSIB certification, and offers a meaningful written warranty. Be cautious of verbal promises — get everything in writing.
Our standard warranty covers 5 years on parts and labour, including the motor. We're fully insured and WSIB certified for every job.
4. Red Flags to Watch For
Avoid companies that exhibit these warning signs:
- No physical address or showroom in the GTA
- Pressure tactics — demanding deposits before a site visit
- No written warranty document provided before signing
- Unable to provide references or show past installations
- Quoting without measuring — accurate quotes require onsite measurement
5. Questions to Ask Before Hiring
Bring this checklist to every consultation:
- How many years have you been installing roll-up shutters specifically?
- Can I see 3-5 local installations you've completed?
- What brand of motor do you use, and what's the motor warranty?
- Are you WSIB certified and fully insured?
- Do you handle permits if required?
- What's included in the quote — removal of old hardware, electrical, finishing?
- What's your lead time from order to installation?
