A cottage spends most of the year empty. The nearest neighbour may be out of sight, the road may not be ploughed, and the side of the building that faces the water is usually the side with the most glass.
Roll-up shutters close those openings with interlocking aluminum slats that run in reinforced side guides. Each shutter covers its whole opening, from the housing down to the sill, and solid slats shut out daylight while nobody is there. When you arrive, each curtain rolls up into a compact housing above the opening and the view is exactly as it was.
