What Are Typical Security Shutter Prices in Toronto?
You have three ground-floor windows and a sliding patio door you want covered, and every installer's site says "call for pricing." If you have been comparing security shutters prices online, here are the numbers we publish for Toronto and the GTA: window shutters typically run $800–$1,500 per window, and patio door shutters typically start at $1,900 per door, installed.
Each range covers supply, custom fabrication and installation of one aluminum roll-up shutter. The window range covers a typical residential window; very wide or tall openings price above it. When you compare quotes, check whether each one shows HST separately.
| Opening | Typical installed price | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Window | $800–$1,500 per window | Window size, slat profile, crank rod or motor |
| Patio or sliding door | From $1,900 per door | Door width and height, slat profile, operation |
| Shed or workshop roll-up door | $1,000–$2,500 per door | Opening size and slat type |
| Roll-up garage door | $1,500–$3,500 per door | Single or double width, profile, motor |
| Storefront shutter | $2,500–$8,000 | Width, height and slat profile vary widely |
| Cottage | Quoted per property | Number of openings, travel, site access |
The rest of this post covers what moves a quote from the bottom of its range to the top, a worked example for a typical house, and how to read two quotes side by side.
What Changes the Cost of a Roll-Up Shutter per Window?
Eight things decide where a window lands inside the $800–$1,500 range. Each one pushes the price up or down. None of them adds a fixed amount we can print, because every shutter is built to one measured opening.
- Opening size. A wider or taller window takes more slats, longer side guides and a larger coil in the housing. A wide sliding door moves into the patio door range.
- Slat profile. Standard, Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty slats use progressively more aluminum, and the price follows. More on this in the next section.
- Single-wall or foam-filled slats. A single-wall slat has no foam core and is the most economical. Double-wall is stiffer and costs more. Foam-filled slats cost more again.
- Motorized or crank rod. A manual shutter is raised and lowered with a crank rod from inside. A motorized shutter uses a Somfy tubular motor in the barrel, run by remote or wall switch, and costs more because of the motor, controls and wiring. Our operation types guide compares the two.
- Face-mounted or recessed housing. Most retrofit installs use a housing mounted on the wall above the window. A housing recessed into a soffit or built into a new opening involves building work and moves the price up.
- Colour. Five standard powder-coat colours (white, black, brown, beige and silver) are part of the standard range. A custom Benjamin Moore or RAL match is an additional charge.
- Number of openings in one visit. Several openings measured and installed on the same day share travel and set-up time, which is a reason to price the whole house at once.
- Height and access. A ground-floor window reached from the lawn is a simpler install than a second-storey window over a deck, stairs or landscaping, where ladders or staging add labour.
Light, Medium or Heavy Duty: Which Slat Is Worth Paying For?
For most homes, a Medium-Duty foam-filled slat is the usual window choice. Heavy-Duty costs more and is often picked for ground-floor windows; Standard is the lighter, lower-cost option for shade and privacy.
| Profile | What it is | Where it sits on price | Usually chosen for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (light duty) | The lightest slat, with a slim housing | Lower end of the range | Shade, privacy and light control where a heavier security profile isn't the main concern |
| Medium-Duty | A heavier foam-filled slat than Standard | Middle of the range | The usual choice for residential windows |
| Heavy-Duty | Our heaviest reinforced aluminum slat | Upper end of the range | Ground-floor windows where you want the most substantial slat we offer |
Profile also affects the housing. A heavier or taller slat coils into a larger roll, so it needs a larger box above the window, which matters on a narrow brick header. Single-wall and double-wall slats are mostly used on storefronts and workshops rather than homes. Slat dimensions and size limits for each profile are on our specifications page, and the slats themselves are made by Talius, a Canadian manufacturer.
Worked Example: Three Windows and a Patio Door
Adding our published ranges, three windows and one patio door come to an illustrative total from $4,300 installed. This is arithmetic on typical ranges, not a quote for your house.
| Opening | Qty | Typical range each | Range for this line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Window | 3 | $800–$1,500 | $2,400–$4,500 |
| Patio door | 1 | From $1,900 | From $1,900 |
| Illustrative total | 4 | From $4,300 |
Where a real job lands depends on the factors above. Ground-floor windows in a standard colour with crank rods sit toward the lower half. Motorized Heavy-Duty shutters in a custom colour on taller openings sit toward the upper half. A mix of both lands in between.
If the budget is fixed, decide which openings matter most before the measure. One approach is to start with the ground-floor windows and the door to the yard, then add upper windows later. Ask for each opening priced as its own line so you can drop one without a new quote.
What Should a Written Security Shutter Quote Include?
A written quote should list every opening with its measured size, slat profile, operation and colour, and say what installation and warranty are included. If a line is missing, ask before you sign.
- Onsite measurement. Each opening measured by the installer, with width and height on the quote. Our measurement is free and comes with a written quote.
- Profile and slat type per opening, named, not "standard shutter."
- Operation per opening: crank rod, or motor brand and controls (remote, wall switch), and whether wiring is included.
- Housing and colour: face-mounted or recessed, standard colour or custom match.
- Installation: supply, fabrication, installation and cleanup in the price.
- Lead time: ours is typically 2–4 weeks from order confirmation, and most residential installs are done in a single day.
- Warranty, in writing: we give a 1-year labour and installation warranty, and Talius gives an up to 10-year limited manufacturer warranty on parts. Read both terms, not just the longest number.
How Do You Compare Two Shutter Quotes Line by Line?
Put both quotes in one table, one row per item, and compare like for like before you compare totals. A lower total can simply mean a lighter slat, a crank rod in place of a motor, or sizes estimated without a site visit.
| Line item | Check on both quotes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Measurements | Each opening listed with width and height, measured on site | A quote from photos or rough sizes isn't comparable to one measured on site |
| Slat profile | The profile named per opening (Standard, Medium-Duty, Heavy-Duty) | A lighter slat explains much of a lower total |
| Slat type | Single-wall, double-wall or foam-filled | Foam-filled slats cost more than hollow ones |
| Operation | Crank rod, or motor brand and model, plus remote or wall switch | Motorized and manual quotes aren't like for like |
| Housing | Face-mounted or recessed, and its colour | Recessed work adds building work |
| Colour | Standard colour or custom match | A custom match is an extra charge |
| Installation and wiring | Supply, fabrication, installation, wiring and cleanup included | Missing lines become extras later |
| Warranty | Labour and installation term, and the manufacturer's parts term and wording | "Limited" and "parts" change what is covered |
| Lead time | Weeks from order confirmation to install day | Lets you plan around the date you need |
Ask any installer, us included, to fill in every row. Once two quotes match line for line, the totals become comparable. To start with ours, book a free onsite measurement, or read more about window security shutters first.
