The Basics

What Are Roll-Up Security Shutters?

A roll-up security shutter is a curtain of interlocking aluminium slats that travels vertically in guide rails fixed either side of an opening and rolls into a housing above it. Each slat is extruded aluminium with an insulating foam core, so a closed shutter puts a physical barrier across the opening, blocks light, and cuts heat transfer through the glass behind it. Operation is either manual, by crank, or motorised from a remote or a wall switch.

Because the curtain travels straight up and needs no swing-out clearance, it suits openings a hinged or sectional door cannot serve — narrow laneway garages, basement windows sitting close to grade, patio doors and storefronts. Retracted, it sits in its housing and leaves the opening clear. Size, slat profile and finish are specified per opening rather than bought off a shelf, which is why every quote starts with a measure. What Etobicoke Homes Actually Need

Etobicoke is really four different jobs, and which one you have is decided by where in it you live.

Roll-up shutter fitted to a wood-framed laneway garage

Mimico · New Toronto · Long Branch

Lakeshore Laneways

Older semis and bungalows on narrow lots, most with a rear lane and a detached garage. A roll-up door travels vertically and needs no swing-out clearance — often the only type that fits safely.

Alderwood · Markland Wood · Eatonville

Garden-Level Rear Openings

Postwar bungalows put basement windows and side doors close to grade at the back of the property. It is the least overlooked part of the house, and the thing owners most often ask us to cover.

The Kingsway · Sunnylea · Stonegate

Period Homes, Matched Finishes

Around The Kingsway the hardware is the easy part. Housings and guides get specified to sit against existing brick, stone and trim rather than in front of it.

The Queensway · Rexdale

Storefront & Employment Lands

Retail frontage and the employment lands out toward Rexdale need closures a landlord will sign off on that still look right by day — grilles where visibility matters, solid shutters where it does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know

Cost is driven by the size of the opening, the slat profile, whether it is manual or motorized, the controls specified, the mounting conditions on site, and what the installation involves. Rather than quote one range across every product, each application page carries its own: window shutters, garage doors, storefronts and side-folding grilles. We confirm the figure for your openings after a free onsite measure.
No. Etobicoke is inside our core GTA service area, so there is no travel fee for consultations or standard installation visits.
Usually, yes — it is one of the reasons people call us. A roll-up door travels vertically and needs no swing-out clearance, which is what makes it work in the tight rear lanes through Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch where a sectional or swing door cannot open safely. More detail on laneway garage doors.
Yes, and finish coordination is usually the deciding detail rather than the hardware. Older Etobicoke properties often have mixed substrates and trim that has been modified over the years, so we confirm the mounting surface on site and match housings and guides to the existing brick, stone or capping.
Yes. Garden-level rear windows and side doors on postwar bungalows are the single most common Etobicoke enquiry we get. Window security shutters close those openings without permanent bars, and can be set to a partial position for light and airflow.
Yes. Retail and restaurant frontage is regular work for us — solid storefront shutters where the unit closes down completely, side-folding grilles where the display needs to stay visible. Most units need the install scheduled outside trading hours and signed off by the landlord or property manager first, so we plan access and timing into the quote.
Typical lead time is 2 to 4 weeks from confirmed order, since every shutter is fabricated to your exact dimensions and colour. Most residential installations are completed in a single day. Larger multi-opening projects are scoped individually and we issue a timeline with the quote.
Every installation comes with a 1-year warranty on labour and installation quality — anything to do with how the product is measured, mounted, sealed or wired. The product itself is covered separately by the manufacturer's warranty; Talius rollshutters, for example, carry a 10-year limited manufacturer warranty on parts and material defects. Full terms are in your quote paperwork and our Terms & Conditions.
