A counter opening on a new pool cabana
The cabana sits at the edge of the pool in the back yard. Its front wall has a wide counter opening facing the water, with a dark stone base and a white counter top.
A roll-up shutter closes that whole opening when the cabana is not in use, and opens it again for a day by the pool. The owners chose manual operation, worked from inside the cabana.

How we installed the cabana shutter
The shutter was built to size for the opening, about 8 ft wide by 4 ft high, with 40 mm aluminum slats.
We installed it while the cabana was still in its house wrap, before the exterior cladding went on. The box sits inside the cabana above the opening, and the guide rails run down each side on the wood framing, so all of the hardware is on the inside.
Two colours, one for each side of the wall
The box, the rails and the curtain are each ordered in their own colour. Here we kept the box and rails white to suit the inside of the cabana, and made the curtain and bottom bar black to match the exterior.
From the pool side, all you see is a black aluminum curtain across the counter, next to the dark stone base.
The result
The shutter opens and closes with a crank rod from inside the cabana, and a pair of sliding locks holds it in place when it is down. When it is up, the counter is fully open to the pool, and the white box stays tucked against the framing above it.
