The Basics

What Are Roll-Up Security Shutters?

A roll-up security shutter is a curtain of interlocking aluminum slats that travels vertically in guide rails fixed either side of an opening and rolls into a housing above it. Each slat is extruded aluminum, with insulated foam-filled profiles available, so a closed shutter puts a physical barrier across the opening and blocks light. Operation is either manual, by crank, or motorized from a remote or a wall switch.

In Toronto the opening usually decides the product more than the house does. Downtown, the typical job is a laneway garage behind a Victorian or semi-detached house, where the lane is 12 to 16 feet wide and a door that swings or tilts outward cannot open safely — a roll-up curtain travels straight up and needs no clearance in front of the building. On busy streets it is ground-floor windows and storefronts facing the sidewalk; in North York and Scarborough it is patio doors, walkouts and garages on detached homes. Size, slat profile and finish are specified per opening, which is why every quote starts with a measure. More on laneway garage doors and roll-up shutters.

What Toronto Properties Actually Need

Toronto work comes in four shapes, and the street usually tells us which one it will be before we arrive.

Roll-up shutter custom-fit to a narrow laneway garage opening

The Annex · Leslieville · Cabbagetown · Little Portugal

Laneway Garages

Laneways here run 12 to 16 feet wide, and garages behind older homes rarely have a standard opening. A roll-up door travels straight up and coils into a compact housing — nothing swings into the lane and no track runs across the ceiling, which often makes it the only type that fits. Laneway doors are one of our most common Toronto jobs.

Victorian & Semi-Detached Streets

Ground-Floor Windows

Victorian and semi-detached homes along busy corridors put ground-floor windows a step from the sidewalk. Window shutters add a closable layer for security, privacy and shade without permanent window bars, and sit retracted in their housing when open.

West-End Patios · Small Backyards

Rear Openings & Close Neighbours

Toronto backyards are small and overlooked. Patio doors and walkouts take a roll-up shutter; retractable privacy screens add privacy, shade and insect screening to a compact deck or patio without boxing the yard in.

Main Streets · Plazas · Industrial Units

Storefronts & Commercial Openings

Retail frontage and industrial units need a closure that still suits the building by day — solid storefront shutters where the unit closes down completely, side-folding grilles where the display should stay visible after hours.

Toronto Service Area FAQ

Yes. We book free onsite consultations across Toronto for homeowners and small commercial properties, with measuring and product recommendations handled directly by our owner-operated team. Toronto is inside our core GTA service area, so there is no travel fee.
Laneway garage doors are one of our most common Toronto jobs. After those come ground-floor window shutters, patio-door shutters and privacy screens for compact backyards, and storefront shutters and grilles on commercial streets.
Yes. Toronto projects routinely involve brick semis, laneway garages on older masonry, narrow side yards and close neighbouring properties. Every shutter is made to the measured opening and mounted to the existing brick, stone, wood or concrete, so we confirm the substrate and headroom in person before anything is ordered.
Yes. Toronto is part of our regular service area, and we work across the GTA from our Richmond Hill base — including Etobicoke, Vaughan, Markham and Mississauga.
Laneway doors typically run $1,500–$3,000 per door; the final figure depends on opening width, slat profile and whether the door is manual or motorized. Window shutters typically run $800–$1,500 per window. We confirm the price in a written quote after a free onsite measure. Details on laneway doors and window shutters.
Usually, yes — it is why most laneway owners call us. The curtain travels vertically in side guides and coils into a housing above the opening, so nothing swings into the lane and no track runs across the garage ceiling. Non-standard openings on older structures are routine, since every door is made to the measured size.
Yes. Solid storefront shutters suit units that close down completely; side-folding grilles suit frontage where the display should stay visible. Most commercial installs need landlord or property-manager sign-off and are scheduled outside trading hours, so we plan access and timing into the quote.
